Greek Variants:

  • Philia (φιλία): Deep, affectionate friendship built on loyalty, shared values, and mutual respect
  • Eros (ἔρως): Romantic, passionate, or sexual desire, named after the Greek god of fertility. The ancient Greeks often viewed it as an intense, fiery, and sometimes dangerous loss of control.
  • Storge (στοργή): Natural familial love, such as the protective affection between parents and children or among siblings.
  • Agape (ἀγάπη): Selfless, unconditional, and empathetic love extended to all people or a community, which became a central concept in the Christian New Testament.
  • Pragma (πρᾶγμα): Enduring, practical love rooted in reason, long-term commitment, and making compromises over time.
  • Ludus: Playful, casual love expressed through flirting, teasing, and lighthearted fun.
  • Philautia (φιλαυτία): Self-love, which can be healthy self-esteem or unhealthy narcissism if taken to an extreme.
  • Mania (μανία): Obsessive love that turns extreme, frantic, or driven by jealousy.
